The number-one movie at the box office recently was a sequel to a movie that came out 36 years earlier. Many will argue the sequel is better, and I tend to agree. Most movies that do well at the box office are immediately green-lit for another installment, and that installment is rushed, not thought out, and not that good. Many tend to fizzle and lose the luster of the original.
When Jesus originally appeared on this earth, angels flew in faster than an F-18 and said, “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord” (Luke 2:11). Jesus played the part we could not; he became our substitute. Jesus knew every line of the law, and unlike us he kept it all with pinpoint precision.
What is better will be Jesus’ sequel return. Jesus comforted his disciples with these words: “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (John 14:3).
Jesus has a home waiting for you—heaven. When will that sequel drop? Will it be 3, 6, or 36 years from now or tomorrow? It is easy to let our hearts be troubled, to let our faith fizzle, or to allow our love to lose luster. Still, Jesus loves us. He flew into the danger zone of sin and death for you and me! And when our final credits roll, he will return. He is coming to take you to be with him forever.
