The most sufficient book ever

While there are plenty of books I like to read and many others I want to read, there is really only one book I need to read. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16,17). Notice that final phrase—If you have the Bible, you are “thoroughly equipped for every good work.” You’re not mostly equipped for every good work. You’re not thoroughly equipped for some good works. No, you are thoroughly equipped for every good work!

In other words, the Bible is the most sufficient book ever. It is all you need to do everything God wants. Our Father knows it’s easy for his children to forget both his commands and his promises, so he made the brilliant choice to write them all down! You need to know where you came from, where you are going, who you are, and who God is. You can’t live well without identity, hope, forgiveness, and an answer to death. Thankfully, the Bible specializes in all of life’s essential questions.

So before you scroll through the latest words written by flawed humans, turn your attention to the words written by our flawless God. His Word is what your heart most needs. No wonder the psalmist said of God’s words, “They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold. … By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward” (Psalm 19:10,11).
