In the Bible book of Acts, after the disciples watched Jesus rise into the clouds, an angel came to ask them why they were still standing there. (Um, I’d probably be standing there too.) The disciples went back to Jerusalem, and all the men and women gathered together to pray. After all, a lot had gone on in the past few months—Jesus was crucified, died, came back to life, and then returned to heaven alive!
For all the times the followers seemed a little dense before, they were incredibly clear thinking at this moment. Peter stood up and said, “Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. He was one of our number and shared in our ministry. … Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us” (Acts 1:16,17,21).
That stopped me in my tracks. The disciples knew they were the group the Scriptures were talking about; they knew they were being used to fulfill God’s plan and promises. That’s amazing!
Then I realized that for believers now, we fulfill God’s promises too (even though we’re also often a little dense). Just because the Bible is done being written doesn’t mean the Acts are done. God placed each one of us at this moment in time to continue to fulfill his promises to this generation. You are the fulfillment! That’s amazing!
