If Jesus knocked on your front door, would you let him in?
The Samaritans didn’t. “[Jesus] sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem” (Luke 9:52,53). Apparently, when the Samaritans heard that Jesus was heading for Jerusalem, they locked their doors and RSVP’d with a hard no. Why? Because Jesus was “heading for Jerusalem.” The Samaritans didn’t think they needed Jerusalem; they had their own place for worship on Mt. Gerizim. Thus, when Jesus implied that their religion was wrong and the Jewish religion was right, they wanted nothing to do with him.
This is the tricky thing about Jesus. He wants to talk to you, but part of that talk might be about things you need to change. You might have your own “Mt. Gerizim,” a place you go that God doesn’t like or a thing you consider spiritually good that God considers spiritually bad. If Jesus wanted to change your mind, change your habits, change your religion, and call you to repentance, would you still welcome him? At the heart of us all is this question—Will I change for Jesus, or will I only accept a Jesus who will change for me?
How will you answer that question today?
