Money isn’t worth it

I once sat next to a talkative, kind, and very rich man on an airplane. He told me about his home (a waterfront mansion), his family (including his doctor daughter), and, in a much more somber tone, his regrets. Holding up his airline app, he showed me the shimmering gold background, a nod to his frequent flyer status, and mentioned how often work took him away from his family. “It’s not worth it,” he confessed. “That color isn’t worth it.”

Money, according to Jesus, is tricky. In his parable of the sower, Jesus taught that some Christians don’t mature in their faith because of the “deceitfulness of wealth” (Matthew 13:22). Wealth deceives you. It promises you the mansion and the gold status, but it puts all the sacrifices in the fine print. Even after you earn it, save it, spend it, and buy amazing things with it, you might not think it was worth it.

Not so with Jesus. Seeing his face one day is worth it. Knowing that even today he is with you is worth it. No matter what it costs you to follow him, what temporary pleasure or personal plan you have to sacrifice to do God’s will today, Jesus is absolutely worth it.

But don’t take my word for it: “Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they were saying: ‘Worthy is the Lamb!’” (Revelation 5:11,12).
