What to do with doubt

Recently, I met two women who were struggling with doubt. The first was raised in another religion but had fallen in love with a committed Christian. She was humble enough to learn about his Jesus, but she had her doubts. Was one religion right and the other wrong? Jesus is beautiful and forgiving, but is he true?

The second woman faced the same doubts despite a very different path. She had been raised in a Christian church but wondered, as an adult, if Christianity was correct. What about other sincere believers from other religions? What if other faiths are climbing the same mountain toward God, just on different paths?

Two different stories; one similar struggle—doubt. How about you? Do you have doubts about the Christian faith? about Christ himself? Perhaps you wrestled with doubt the first time you had a Buddhist friend or a Muslim coworker or took a college class on comparative religions, experiences that might have turned your exclamation of faith into a hesitant question mark. Or maybe you doubt God’s love for you after all you have done in your life?

If so, would you consider reading the gospel of Luke? Listen to how Luke begins: “I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught” (1:3,4). Certainty. No doubts. That was Luke’s goal for his gospel. That’s why he wrote an orderly account to Theophilus.

That’s why he wrote those 24 chapters for you.
