What can’t God give you?

Abram of the Old Testament was in his 80s and childless, even though God had promised him a son. In a moment of doubt, Abram cried out, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me?” (Genesis 15:2). Have you been there? When money is tight or guilt is raging or loneliness sets in: “Lord, what can you give me?” Listen to God’s answer: “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them. … So shall your offspring be” (Genesis 15:5).

Think about that. The Creator of the stars is the One who made promises to Abram and to you. Are you worried God won’t provide? Look at the stars. God knows each one by name. He knows you and will provide. Are you concerned God won’t work things for your good as he promised? Remember the special star he put in the sky at Jesus’ birth. He can make your difficult situation work for your good. Are you racked with guilt? The One who promises to forgive your every wrong is the One who darkened the star we call the sun on Good Friday to prove that your sin really is forgiven. Are you scared of death? God made the sun rise on Easter morning to reveal that his Son had risen from the grave! Death is not the end. That’s what he will give you!

When tempted to ask, “Lord, what can you give me?” just step outside and look up at the stars … and you’ll have your answer.
