I hate feet

I hate feet. God bless all you podiatrists out there. Seeing the bare feet of others up close really makes me squirm. My husband likes to tease me about it. When we are traveling on the freeway and he sees a vehicle approaching with the front passenger’s bare feet propped on the dashboard, he’ll announce, “Feet coming up on the left!”

You know who didn’t hate feet? Jesus. During his final meal with his disciples the week he died, he shed his outer clothing, got down on his hands and knees, and lovingly washed the grit and grime from the feet of his dearest friends. Feet washing was something typically assigned to a servant or a slave, not to the King of the universe.

Yet Jesus did it. He did it to set an example for all of us: “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (John 13:14,15).

Feet washing can take many forms. The possibilities are endless for us to serve others humbly. We don’t need to hijack our coworkers and neighbors with a basin of sudsy water and a washcloth, but we can shovel the snow from someone’s driveway, send a message of God’s love to a grieving widow, or take a hot meal to a family with a dangerously ill child.

How can you show the love of Jesus by washing someone’s feet today?
